NHRA B. Force, Hight, Krawiec grab top spots

By Lee Elder
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 4, 2019) – Brittany Force, Robert Hight and Eddie Krawiec posted the best qualifying passes, bypassed the normal Saturday drama, and will start atop the ladders of their NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series categories in Sunday’s eliminations for the Arby’s Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Persistent rain forced officials to call off the fourth round of qualifying for the professional teams after Saturday’s third round of time trials.

Force topped the 17-car Top Fuel field with a 1,000-foot lap at 3.720 seconds. She posted the lap during Friday’s rain-delayed second round of qualifying and no car went faster during Saturday’s third round. Terry McMillen was the non-qualifier.

Hight, Force’s teammate, grabbed the Funny Car pole with a 3.920-second pass Saturday. Jeff Diehl was the Funny Car non-qualifier.

Krawiec nabbed the top spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle, zipping down the quarter-mile distance in just 6.851 seconds. Andie Rawlings was the non-qualifier in PSM.

Typically, Saturday’s fourth and final qualifying session is dramatic at both ends of the 16-spot qualifications ladder. At the top end of the ladder, the overall best time collects the most advantageous starting spot. At the bottom rung of the ladder, the final qualifier is determined and the non-qualifier list is produced. The rain that has bedeviled this event for two days knocked out the drama of the fourth and final qualifying chances for the professionals.

Sunday’s eliminations are scheduled to begin at 11 am, Eastern time.
