Schatz wins WoO race at Eldora

By Lee Elder
ROSSBURG, Ohio (May 11, 2018) – Donny Schatz cut hard right, missed a flipping car and then hung on to win the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series portion of the Let’s Race Two weekend at Eldora Speedway.

The Outlaws share the track with the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car Series this weekend.

“Sometimes you only go as hard as you need to,” Schatz said later. “That’s a big part of the World of Outlaws, you have to be there at the end if you want to win a championship.”

Or win races. Schatz started third in the Outlaws race and was running second when then leader Aaron Reutzel contacted the Turn 1 retaining wall and flipped wildly into the air. Schatz aimed his racer between the airborne Reutzel and the outside wall and got through. Reutzel was not hurt but his car was unable to continue.

Jason Schuchart was second to Schatz, Brad Sweet was third, followed by Jac Haudenschild and Cole Duncan.

“We’ve been on a consistent run lately,” Schuchart said. “That’s our fifth top 10 finish in the last six races. We’re getting closer and closer (to winning).”

Haudenschild led the early laps before Donny Schatz got a good start after a lap six caution period. The two veterans raced hard for the top spot before Reutzel got by both of them and took the lead. As Schatz and Haudenschild raced for second, Reutzel extended his lead before he jumped the cushion in turn 1 and brushed the wall, flipping directly in front of Schatz. Schatz squeezed through on the high side.

The starting lineup was a tough one to crack. Jason Sides, Kraig Kinser, Daryn Pittman and Shane Stewart needed to use provisional positions to get in the 28-car field.

NOTES: The event attracted 37 WoO cars and 22 USAC sprint cars … Brady Bacon was the only driver to compete in both events … Bacon won the USAC race. The 30-lap USAC race was completed without a caution period … Cole Duncan, Donnie Schatz, Jac Haudenschild, Aaron Reutzel won WoO heat races. Bacon won the Last Chance Showdown … The Outlaws will appear at Eldora six more times this season.
