RIP Tom ‘Mongoose’ McEwen

By Lee Elder
The NHRA announced today that Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, long among the top personalities in drag racing history, passed away Sunday at age 81.

RPMHD founder Michael Dennis said, “It’s hard to believe, I just saw him recently. He was a great guy. The sport will miss him.”

McEwen competed in both the Funny Car and Top Fuel categories and was voted the 16th on the Top 50 NHRA drivers in 2001. He was handed the nickname ‘Mongoose’ by engine builder Ed Donovan in 1964. His business acumen and the nickname were good for McEwen, the sport and racing rival Don ‘The Snake’ Prudhomme.
