Motorsports Recap And Behind The Scenes Access

NHRA Spring Training Day 2

CHANDLER, Ariz. (February 1, 2018) Now that we’re into the second day of Nitro Spring Training we got to see many more full passes than yesterday. The drivers and teams managed to dust off the cobwebs that come with not being on a racetrack in two in a half months. With the racetrack conditions having improved, many teams made more passes than they did yesterday and more drivers hit the track to make their testing debut.

Top Fuel

The quickest from today’s test session was Don Schumacher Racing’s Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown. Schumacher had the fastest speed at 330.15 mph during his second of three passes. That particular run he ran 3.717 seconds and wound up second fastest of the day. Brown was just three thousandths quicker than Schumacher with his 3.714 second elapsed time during his third and final pass of the day. Doug Kalitta and Richie Crampton made their testing debuts today. Kalitta had three runs, the best producing a 3.729 second pass at 315.34 mph. Crampton will be looking for more tomorrow as both of his runs were plagued with tire shake. Steve Torrence is testing his top fueler as well as his father’s. In his own car, his best pass of the day was a 3.770 second run at 268.49 mph. Leah Pritchett also threw her name in the 3.7 second club with a 3.740 second pass at 308.28 mph.

Funny Car

For the second day in a row, Matt Hagan has set himself apart from the pack. Hagan had the fastest elapsed time and speed with his 3.879 second run at 330.72 mph. 2017 World Champion Robert Hight went 3.880 seconds at 324.05 mph in his first of three runs. Ron Capps also made a decent run in 3.886 seconds at 327.74 mph in his last attempt of the day. A few drivers found themselves in the 3.9 second range including Jonnie Lindberg, Tommy Johnson Jr., and JR Todd. We’re still waiting for Shawn Langdon to complete a decent pass. He had three attempts today but he faced tire shake on every last one. The rest of the field ran in the 4.0s or worse and will look to improve tomorrow.

Pro Stock

Elite Motorsports made some changes for Erica Enders’ program and they paid off. Enders went 6.555 seconds in the quarter mile at 210.28 during her second pass of the day. That pass gave Enders the low ET of the day as well as quickest speed. As the day went on her runs got slower but her teammates, Jeg Coughlin and Alex Laughlin, were able to get their Chevy Camaros into the 6.5 second range as well. Enders’ third teammate, Vincent Nobile struggled to get his Camaro down the track but when he finally did, the timing system had a minor malfunction and didn’t correctly record his lap time. Long-time Dodge driver, Derick Cramer made his first passes in his new Chevy Camaro under the support of KB Racing. The best of Kramer’s three passes was 6.635 seconds at 205.88 mph. We’re still waiting for more Pro Stock drivers to go down the track, KB Racing’s Greg Anderson and Jason Line are likely to hit the track by the weekend.
