Dodge NHRA Nationals Race Report

READING, Penn. (September 24, 2017) The Dodge NHRA Nationals did not disappoint this weekend. The entire event was packed with the close racing and on-track action that fans have come to expect from any Mello Yello Drag Racing event.

Top Fuel

Points leader, Steve Torrence raced his way to the final round by defeating Terry Haddock, Leah Pritchett, and teammate, Dom Lagana before squaring off against championship contender, Brittany Force for the trophy. Force’s road to the final round didn’t come easy either. She took out Wayne Newby and heavy-hitters Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown. Torrence’s 3.857 second pass at 258.76 mph was no match for the Monster Energy Driver, Brittany Force. She laid down a solid 3.756 second lap at 326.24 mph.

Funny Car

Brittany Force’s younger sister also made it to the final round of competition where she faced points leader and defending world champion, Ron Capps. Courtney first ran Bob Tasca III in the opening round and then took her teammate, Robert Hight in the second, before driving past “Fast” Jack Beckman in the semis. Capps won the first three rounds of racing against Jim Campbell and his teammates, Tommy Johnson Jr., and Matt Hagan. In a close race the final round went to Capps who went 3.968 seconds at 326.48 mph over Force’s 3.993 second effort at 311.70 mph.

Pro Stock

It was an all KB Racing final round with teammates, Bo Butner and Greg Anderson racing for the victory. Butner drove past Val Smeland, Erica Enders, and Allen Johnson to get to the final. Anderson also face his share of tough competitors with Brian Self, Tanner Gray, and his other teammate, Jason Line before he ran Butner in the final. Despite leaving almost four-hundredths before Butner, Anderson didn’t have the horsepower to keep up his starting line lead. Butner’s winning time of 6.613 seconds at 209.95 mph bested Anderson’s 6.660 second pass at 206.95 mph.

Pro Stock Motorcycle

You know it’s going to be a great race when the two riders who are No. 1 and No. 2 in the points have to race each other in the final round. Before making it to the final, LE Tonglet had three tough customers in Angie Smith, defending world champion, Jerry Savoie, and Hector Arana Jr. Eddie Krawiec didn’t exactly have an easy trip to the finals either. Krawiec bested Kelly Clontz, his teammate, Andrew Hines, and the No. 1 qualifier, Scotty Pollacheck before reaching the final round. Krawiec and Tonglet left the starting line at the exact same time, but Tonglet’s motorcycle quickly fell silent and coasted to the stripe in 17.593 seconds at a slow 31.71 mph. Kraweic picked up the win and extended his points lead over Tonglet to 71 with his victorious 6.852 second pass at 196.70 mph.
